An idea becomes reality - igus:bike becomes RCYL
While on holiday on the beach in Florida, the idea for a rust-free and easy-care plastic bicycle took roots in igus CEO Frank Blase's mind and he couldn't let go of it. A bicycle with the beautiful working title igus:bike rose up in his mind, but one piece of the puzzle was still missing to complete the project. It was found ten years later - with the Dutch start-up mtrl.
The go-ahead was given for the igus:bike project, it was tinkered with, tried out, discarded, rethought and developed ... three years passed before the first prototype of the urban bike was ready. Finally, the igus:bike was presented to the world at the Hannover Messe, and even German Chancellor Olaf Scholz marvelled at the plastic bicycle. Development was intensified, new prototypes were assembled, tested and improved.
Until the time finally arrived at the beginning of 2024 - a small batch of the first 100 igus:bikes went into production! The prototype status is gradually being abandoned and the focus is increasingly shifting towards high volume production. That's why the working title igus:bike is now being discarded and RCYL is seeing the light of day! Once high volume production has started and the bike goes on sale, there will only be the RCYL logo on the frame - and the igus:bike will be history.
